Schmidt DSE 2023 Annual Report
We are happy to share our 2023 annual report that highlights a foundational year for the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science & Environment and the work we are engaged in.

Addressing Climate-Caused Water Scarcity
The Problem
Globally, about 1.5 billion people depend on snowmelt for their sources of fresh water, and many are in climate-vulnerable regions like the Himalayas and the Andes.

Improve Wildfire Recovery in National Parks & Beyond
The Problem
Wildfires are some of the greatest threats to species and ecosystems nationwide that depend on millions of acres of lands for critical habitat refuge. These same places also act as vital carbon sinks. Agencies like the National Park Service (NPS) face grave challenges in addressing wildfires from climate change to resource limitations.

End Plastic Pollution
The Problem
Global plastics pollution is an urgent and growing concern that is exacerbating the climate crisis, creating threats to endangered species and at-risk ecosystems, putting human health at risk, and amplifying core environmental justice challenges.

Co-Design Environmental Stewardship
The Problem
Since time immemorial Indigenous peoples and local communities have successfully stewarded ecosystems in accordance with their knowledge, innovations, and practices.
[Closed] Call for Postdoctoral Scholars - Environmental Science / Data Science
The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science & Environment (DSE) at UC Berkeley, along with an opportunity from our partners in the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Center for Large Landscape Conservation, is accepting applications for multiple postdoc positions from recent PhDs in environmental science and/or data science fields interested in providing domain specific research that informs the development of data enabled solutions to our most pressing environmental challenges.
Washington Post (Opinion): How to end plastic pollution on Earth for good
A new editorial from the Washington Post features DSE's research on ending global plastic pollution.
