Welcome A'Maya Philpot, Visiting Scholar & Undergraduate Student at Tuskegee University

By DSE June 6, 2025

We are thrilled to welcome A'Maya to UC Berkeley this summer, where she hopes to gain hands-on experience in wildlife ecology research.

A’Maya is a sophomore majoring in Animals Science, with a focus on wildlife science. Originally on the pre-veterinary medicine track, she shifted her academic path to explore conservation, ecological research, and the impact of environmental changes on wildlife. Through hands-on experience in animal husbandry and dare care, she has developed a deep commitment to protecting both animals and their habitats. She is actively involved in student organizations such as MANRRS, the Tuskegee Ocean Exploration Club, and the National Society of Leadership and Success, where she serves on the executive board. She is visiting UC Berkeley as part of the university's HBCU Environmental Scholars Program.

On campus this summer, A'Maya will work with DSE team members and Professors Alejandra Echeverri Ochoa and Chris Schell. She hopes to gain hands-on experience in wildlife ecology, including techniques like camera trapping, and to  strengthen my skills in data collection and analysis. I also hope to apply what I learn to real-world conservation efforts and  look forward to connecting with peers and mentors who share a passion for protecting wildlife and the environments on which they depend.
